I built this original version of Edith Wiens’s site many years ago when I was a teenager, as a Flash site. I was very happy with it at the time; it had a menu which morphed text from roman to italic, an animation I did by hand, a music player in the footer, and gracefully moving beams of light, which I think might have been randomized. It was bilingual, with English and German versions.

Content was managed in a MySQL database with a basic CMS.

Honestly I can’t quite remember whether that data was pulled in to Flash, or if I had an HTML layer as a transparent iframe over top. I think it may have been the latter.

At some point later I added a plain HTML fallback with no Flash, and later again when Flash disappeared I did a quick HTML/CSS approximation of what the Flash site used to look like.

That was supposed to be temporary, and I actually rebuilt the site three or four times over the years, as hobby projects, with nothing quite ever getting finished or published.

Finally in 2023 when it was nearly 20 years after the original launch I put something together which neared completion.
